Desktop effects not working

I have installed FC-!3 in my system.Everything is working fine except the desktop effects.

If i turn them on i cannot launch any applications like gimp or open office.

If i click on any of the applications the machine will either get stuck or i will be automatically

logged out .

I am using a intel machine with core 13 processor and with 4GB RAM.

What could be the problem????
