OpenOffice to the rescue :)
Open each ascii file in OO and OO will pop a banner
where it will let you choose Character Set (the default of which will be 
UTF-8,
The Font - the default will be Liberation Serif
The Language - Here ther default for me is English.
Click OK
File -> Save as

and you're done!
