Whereas the following does work even if gdm and kdm are installed. DISPLAYMANAGER=KDE The only other possibility for this not working is the grub configuration vga setting. The easiest way to change this is using the boot configuration utility system-config-boot from yum. From here you can setup the graphics resolution used during boot. My suspicion being that the KDE login configuration requires this to work.
