There is an undocumented setting which make the fglrx driver use the old 
acceleration. Not sure if that fixes it but you could try.

Try issuing this command when X is stopped (e.g. init 3):
# aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE
Then restart X (e.g. init 5).
