GDM uses gconf to configure itself these days, so you're on the right
track. Except that GDM doesn't run as *you*, it runs as the gdm user.
So you need to do that to gdm's home .gconf, or run gconf-editor as
gdm (which is more tricky).

I really wish there was a proper way to customise GDM, like the old days.
