A really determined attacker could recover much of the previous content. At a bare minimum you should use the drive's built-in secure erase feature (either using hdparm's (experimental) support or using the vendor's proprietary tools). The more paranoid organisations will physically destroy drives (possibly using a variety of methods :) before returning some agreed-upon fragment for identification of returned parts.
