Personally (while I know it's leaving data in the cloud), I find that
it's easiest to simply use a third-party like Google Calendar to handle
the synchronization.

Many smartphones these days have over-the-air sync with Google (Apple's
iPhone, all of the Android-based phones...) and Thunderbird/Lightning
has the Google Provider extension to sync with Google Calendar.

Also, with such a solution there's no hassle with getting the sync
application to work either (since there's no need to directly connect
the phone to the computer for syncing)

Of course, if there are reasons why your calendar data cannot be stored
in the cloud, then this is not the solution for you.
