f13 kde sound issues

Whenever I do a fresh login, the kde sound mixer applet is muted
regardless of what state i left it in before. Sometime at login I see
a (rapidly disappearing) message from phonon that the sound card is
invalid. Sound is working though and the sound mixer correctly
controls the volume.

If I select the multimedia option in system settings I get a dialog containing:

This is the list of devicdes KDE thinks can be removed:
 * Capture: PulseAudio Sound Server
 * Output : PulseAudio Sound Server

Pulseaudio is running:

% ps -ef | grep puls
cr        3234     1  0 15:46 ?        00:00:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start
cr        3403  3234  0 15:46 ?        00:00:00 /usr/libexec/pulse/gconf-helper

(cr is my username)

I think something is wrong somewhere. This is a fresh installation of
f13, but the home directory is the same as I had for f12.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Chris
