Will try it next time (hope I do not have to :)
I had already started Craig White's suggestion:

rm/var/lib/rpm/__db.00*
rpm --rebuilddb

which finished OK, and I am now updating
and it seems to be working rather well.

I will remember the rpmdb_recover.
It is a symlink to /usr/bin/db_recover
