Basically, the reason a product succeeds and a competitor fails does not
have much to do whether one if better or not. IMHO, the reason that VHS
triumphed was that it had much more content available. Certainly price
is a significant consumer motivator. Windows is successful in spite of
the fact that most of its users hate it.  Back in the mainframe days,
IBM's hardware, OS (and mainframe DOS) were the overwhelming winner when
there were clearly better systems in terms of throughput and technology,
such as some of Honeywell and Burroughs systems.  Certainly marketing
plays a big role.
