What the BIOS does after failed attempts will be determined by how that BIOS is programmed. We can't answer that, because yours may be different than mine. However, I've not heard of a BIOS that does anything other than make you reboot after three failed attempts. Grub doesn't change anything on the drive if you fail, you can keep on trying. Though I can't recall if it, also, tells you that you've tried too many times, making you have to reboot to try again. > 2. Usually used to shut down the machine. start on control-alt-delete exec /sbin/shutdown -r now "Control-Alt-Delete pressed" By the way, I'll drop a hint: It's wrong where it says that key sequence is usually used to shut down the machine, it's usually used to reboot.
