Try running

  iostat -k -x 1

on the machine during the entire test.
Have a look at the utilization rate of the disk (is it 100% or not?),
throughput in KiB/s, the CPU usage (system? user? waiting? idle?),
RAM used for caching (you need a "vmstat 1" in parallel for this).
