If you want to inform yourself, you might want to start here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeCSS but essentially there is an encryption put onto most commercially available DVD and the code to play them on a computer or on a store bought DVD player is licensed. The GPL license would never permit distribution of such restrictive code. Thus any software that acquiesces to such restrictive licensing terms will never be part of a Linux distribution (at least legally).
