Thanks very much, I followed the advice there and now I can indeed 
access my MySQL data from my Windows XP machine.
I'm not sure why my previous attempt 
(using a different installer) failed.

I was slightly put off by the fact that MySQL
seemed to be trying to persuade me to choose a paid option.
Also all the documentation refers to setting up a MySQL _server_,
while I just want a MySQL client (under Windows).
But maybe this is just a matter of the language used by MySQL.

While following this document worked, as I said,
I don't think it is very good, at least for someone like me
who just wants to install a Windows client
to access a MySQL database on a Linux server.
It seems to be aimed at a completely different audience.

Now I'll move on to LDAP ...
