The next day I come in to a clean install from the Live CD and I get the login screen. I type “root” and “password”. “Authentication Failed”….

 

If I wanted an operating system that all it does is display “Authentication Failed”, I’d be in business. I was hoping it would do more than that.

 

What am I doing wrong?

You're not doing anything wrong. Fedora Gnome doesn't allow root access from the signon screen. You have to sign in using a user id other than root, and then su - to get to the root login.
