I have used external SATA/eSATA boxes hot-plugged (via suitable passive
plugs/sockets/cables) into the standard motherboard SATA ports on
Shuttle boxes for over 4 years. Often hot-plugged several times a day.

I have never blown a mech disk, eSATAp memory stick, SSD or mother
board ... yet! ...

My latest arrangement (eSATAp) does indeed pick up the power 12V and 5V
directly from the computer power supply but that is a recent innovation.

Yes I accept there may be extra protection built into a specialised
external motherboard eSATA(p) port.
