Does /etc/hosts and/or /etc/resolv.conf change when you change the hostname information? If your address is setup via dhcp, what does a "tcpdump -i eth0" show is happening when the hostname changes? And why so many errors on your eth0 nic *and* your loopback nic? Are you using IPV4 or IPV6?
