True, but over a course of several years (say, since Fedora came to life, let's not go into RH days) nVidia drivers have been available and solid *most* of the time, while ATI drivers have been quite the opposite. Both had issues, but statistically nVidia appears more reliable. Simply put, over the course of several years they provided quite decent support for their own hardware and drivers, unlike ATI. So when you are investing and commiting to some hardware, nVidia seems to be a safer bet, despite the closed source.
