I had:

# Use MD5 or DES to encrypt password? Red Hat use MD5 by default.
MD5_CRYPT_ENAB no

ENCRYPT_METHOD SHA512

So, the new file really doesn't change anything since encription was
already SHA512. If the defautl is MD5, maybe I changed this in an
interface. I don't remember.
