With respect, I would argue that this isn't as hard and fast a rule as you make it sound. Replying to a digest can be done, especially when using the MIME style digests. This is the list default for new subscribers, and highly recommended for anyone using the digest. This method sends each digest as a MIME message with individual list messages as RFC822 parts.
