mplayer works, gmplayer doesn't

When trying to play a DVD-R,
mplayer produces audio and video,
gmplayer only produces audio, a control thingie,
and an error message where the video should be:
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out(-vo) device.

mplayer dvd://1 -dvd-device /dev/dvd1
The preceeding command plays the DVD-R,
but also gives me lots of error messages:
MPlayer 29092-4.4.1 (C) 2000-2009 MPlayer Team
mplayer: could not connect to socket
mplayer: No such file or directory
Failed to open LIRC support. You will not be able to use your remote
control.

gmplayer dvd://1 -dvd-device /dev/dvd1
The preceeding command produces an error message where the video should be:
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out(-vo) device.
I have to kill -9 the process.
I get lots of error messages as with mplayer:
