+1. Same here. Turning off Desktop Effects allowed successful login to
my laptop. Disabling Desktop Effects killed X and I was spat out to
GDM. Before disabling Desktop Effects I would have to try several
attempts to login before I got to my desktop. With Desktop Effects off
I can login without problems.

Latitude D410 within Intel (sorry, smolt is not working at the moment
so I can't provide exact details).
