Sometimes it chooses a volume level of its own accord and stubbornly reverts back to it whenever it feels like it (usually after un-pausing or skipping a song). The chosen level is usually somewhere just above the level I want. The above refers to the main volume control in Gnome. The volume control in Rhythmbox is weirder still. It usually shows itself at zero, but if I nudge it up any amount at all, it pushes the main volume up way too high.
