That isn't to say that you can be running them all at once, as daemons providing the same service may have problems running at the same time. But the packages should at least be installable. If two packages conflict for installation, that is a problem which should be fixed. The alternatives system was set up to allow this for such things as MTAs and JREs. The live spins already do everything installs, as they copy over the file system rather than doing package based installation.
