It is possible to get the total amount of buffer or page cache memory, in kilobytes, that are free and available from /proc/meminfo ( attribute "Inactive" ). This is memory that has not been recently used and can be reclaimed for other purposes. ( see http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-4-Manual/en-US/Reference_Guide/s2-proc-meminfo.html) Total Free Memory Available for Applications = (free + Inactive) should hold good in this case.
