i went back to xrandr & found that lowering the refresh rate (duh!)
to cvt produced an acceptable ( to xrandr) mode.

so now i know that x & the radeonhd driver are capable
of 1600x1200 , & now it's a matter of getting that configuration
to be persistent.

adding a Mode entry in the monitor section hasn't seemed to do it..

back to the man page.....
