Just split email in subfolders. I used to have a five-year collection of messages in mbox format. I just split "sent mail" into subfolders based on year. Sent -02 -03 -04 -05 That way "sent" and "inbox" only contain the last calendar year, and each subfolder only contains a given year. Once year turns over, just highlight the emaisl from Jan1 to Dec31 and move those to the right subfolder. Then right-click and "compress" the folder. to eliminate the deleted messages. Searches work as well, but there's little impact in viewing stuff as each folder and subfolder only contains one year's worth of email.
