The story according to the grapevine gossip fence is that ASUS was going to 
put Sugar on one of their small notebooks and compete for the OLPC contract.

Rumor has it that they were told that if that happened, their makers discount 
for a windows seat was gone.  This would, since that is about an 80% discount, 
take them out of contention to sell anything with windows on it at a 
competitive price.

That wasn't about to happen, hence the lack of interest in aiding linux in any 
way.

So the story goes anyway.
