After trying each control, in the end, numid=14 'Line' was the best
combination.  The volume keys (+/-) were functional, the volume bar was
not greyed out, and showed a volume setting of 100%.  

BUT, still no sound.

See my post to Mikkel Ellertson in this thread for details of controls
by trial and error.
