The preupgrade failed at the reboot when it couldn't find the kernel it wanted to boot. I had custom compiled kernels on that system, and I think it got confused by their naming. The preupgrade said it completed successfully, and said I just had to reboot to complete it, but it kept getting kernel not found. Because I was just experimenting to test preupgrade functionality, I didn't spend a lot of time determining a solution before I wiped the partition. I suspect more effort would have salvaged the upgrade.
