I don't know if that is intentional or not.  I think you might want to
ask about it on the git list (git@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx).  There was just a
recent thread there on git mailinfo (the tool that is called by git am
to parse the patch and commit message from a file) stripping out too
many []'s from the subject.  This could be another bug that no one has
yet noticed or reported.

In my quick test, leading tabs and spaces were lost when the patch was
applied with git am.
