I have several USB drives that are getting automounted by gnome. I have tried: gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type bool --set /desktop/gnome/volume_manager/automount_media false gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type bool --set /desktop/gnome/volume_manager/automount_drives false gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/volume_manager shows that these are disabled. I even rebooted the machine, yet the drives continue to be automounted.
