A few hours after writing this I remembered KVM would be exposing the
LVM on the Linux side as a "normal IDE disk" to freenas.  After
configuring the freenas KVM, the freebsd kernel did indeed see the LVM
storage as a normal IDE disk.

And now, this thread can die.  :)
