Stuff in cron.daily is run once a day by cron. So you don't have to manually run it. If you don't leave your computer on all of the time, then you probably also want to run the anacron service which is supposed to run things that got skipped because the system wasn't up at the time they were supposed to be run. All of this should have been set up by default.
