What types of machines are you serving files for? If you need to
share files with Windows systems, then you will probably want Samba.
(cifs) It can also be used to share files between Linux machines,
but is probably not the best server for it. You could set up a NFS
server and share selected directories between machines on the
network - there are both Linux and Windows clients for it as well.

For more specialized uses, there are things like the sshfs that
gives you a secure connection using ssh.
