(cifs) It can also be used to share files between Linux machines, but is probably not the best server for it. You could set up a NFS server and share selected directories between machines on the network - there are both Linux and Windows clients for it as well. For more specialized uses, there are things like the sshfs that gives you a secure connection using ssh.
