If I am not mistaken, writing the software RAID metadata to the existing 
partition would damage the filesystem.  Additionally, playing with the root 
partition and the partition that contains /boot (in this case they are the 
same) can very quickly render a system unbootable, as there are many potential 
places where configuration changes would be necessary, including the boot 
loader.  Unless you have a strong attachment to the running instance, I 
strongly recommend backing up your data and starting with a fresh 
installation.
