Thank you for your help and advice with this. I'm going to give it a try this weekend. I just picked up a brand new VCR from the friend I'm helping with this project. Hopefully he bought a good one. This model does have the cheap plastic feel. It's an Emerson EWV404, which only has 4 heads, but printed on the front panel is the phrase '19 micron head'. We shall see if that means the unit is better than the Sony SLV-495.
