Thank you very much. That is the solution. Or at least, the problem does lie with shorewall, as when I disable it with "sudo shorewall clear" I am able to ping in both directions. I haven't yet found a proper shorewall setting. I tried following the "roadwarrior" recipe at <http://www.shorewall.net/OPENVPN.html> but that did not seem to work. I am sure the solution is just around the corner, though.
