It had one line: mary,192.168.5.4 I've no idea where it got this IP address from. In any case, I changed it to 192.168.5.6 and restarted openvpn on both machines, but this did not help. I notice incidentally that in /var/log/messages on my laptop I have: Apr 11 09:54:54 mary openvpn[1860]: SENT CONTROL [server]: 'PUSH_REQUEST' (status=1) Apr 11 09:54:55 mary openvpn[1860]: PUSH: Received control message: 'PUSH_REPLY,route 192.168.5.1,topology net30,ping 10, ping-restart 120,ifconfig 192.168.5.6 192.168.5.5' This seems to suggest that an openvpn connection was established between the two machines. I have no idea what topology net30 means. Actually, I'm not really sure what advantage openvpn would have, even if it was working, over ssh, which works fine.
