Recovery software doesn't help prevent your laptop from being stolen. Even if it gets used before being wiped having an IP address doesn't get your laptop back. You are going to need to work with police and subpoena records and then get a search warrant. It's going to be a lot of work (by someone) to get the machine back. Another approach might be to have a way to disable hardware in the machine that would make it hard to use without going into a repair shop where the serial numbers might be checked.
