I'm trying to configure F-10 on a new computer, an effort that takes
considerable time. I collect information on this computer and then
when I turn back to the "new" computer it's sleeping and requires me
to jog the mouse and enter a long password again. I don't mind doing
that but over the course of a day I am repeating that pointless action
a "hundred times!"

There must be a way to extend the idle interval before this is happens?

System -> preferences -> look and feel -> screensaver

Ok, I am embarrassed! It never occurred to me it might
be a screen saver function, it seemed like a password/security thing.

I will turn it off.

There are three actions here. The display action is set from the "regard computer as idle" setting, when the screensaver kicks in. There's a "lock screen" option checkbox, and under power settings button you can set the display to low power mode or the computer to shutdown on two independent timers.

One setting people find useful is to go to a blank screen quickly, then drop the monitor into power save later. I wish the lock was on a separate timer as well, I don't want to lock every few minutes (as you note) but I would if I am away for an extended period.
