I also tried 'Xorg -configure :1'

It failed, but left me with an xorg.conf.new file with 20 or so screens and cards. Is this the KVMs fault?

There you go...

Probably not realistic to expect auto-detection to identify your display
because it doesn't see your display, only the KVM. If you report
anything, report the data from your KVM.
