Re: How to update from rpm 4.4 to rpm 5.0

I found the 5.0 version of rpm at:
ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/dries.studentenweb.org/apt/fedora.risky/fc7/x86_64/RPMS.dries/rpm-5.0-0.2.0.fc7.rf.x86_64.rpm

Yeah.. says fedora.risky, so it is not official.
But I have to try and fix the problem I am having:

Using my existing fedora provided packages, I tried to
rpmbuild -bb ntfs-3g.spec  (for ntfs-3g-1.5130).
It always dies with memory fault after this:

+ /usr/lib/rpm/atrpms/python_burninversion.sh
+ /usr/lib/rpm/atrpms/brp-compress
+ /usr/lib/rpm/atrpms/brp-strip /usr/bin/strip
+ /usr/lib/rpm/atrpms/brp-strip-static-archive /usr/bin/strip
+ /usr/lib/rpm/atrpms/brp-strip-comment-note /usr/bin/strip /usr/bin/objdump
Processing files: ntfs-3g-1.5130-1.f7
Executing(%doc): /bin/sh -e /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.10146
+ umask 022
+ cd /usr/src/redhat/BUILD
+ cd ntfs-3g-1.5130
+ DOCDIR=/var/tmp/ntfs-3g-1.5130-1.f7-root-root/usr/share/doc/ntfs-3g-1.5130
+ export DOCDIR
+ rm -rf /var/tmp/ntfs-3g-1.5130-1.f7-root-root/usr/share/doc/ntfs-3g-1.5130
+ /bin/mkdir -p /var/tmp/ntfs-3g-1.5130-1.f7-root-root/usr/share/doc/ntfs-3g-1.5130
+ cp -pr AUTHORS ChangeLog COPYING CREDITS NEWS README /var/tmp/ntfs-3g-1.5130-1.f7-root-root/usr/share/doc/ntfs-3g-1.5130
+ exit 0
/bin/sh: 17396: Memory fault

I posed the problem to the ntfs-3g users list, and they say
the problem is with my version of rpm, and not with the spec file,
nor with the resulting Makefiles.
So, that is why I thought I should try to update to rpm 5.0

By the way, even if I try to update via yum, and provide the binary rpms
of the rpm packages directly as args to yum, yum fails because of dependency issues.

Dear list,
My current system has

rpm-4.4.2.2-2
rpm-libs-4.4.2.2-2
rpm-python-4.4.2.2-2

I want to update to

rpm-perl-5.0-0.2.0
rpm-libs-5.0-0.2.0
rpm-build-5.0-0.2.0
rpm-5.0-0.2.0
rpm-python-5.0-0.2.0
The 5.0 builds are made for my version of fedora.

How can I update to the new 5.0 stuff safely, so that
I am not left without an rpm tool.
The dependencies are so many, I am not sure how I can
update and not break the dependents.

Where are you seeing these rpms? They are not provided by Fedora.

If it's rpm5, why not ask their support forums for help:
http://rpm5.org/community.php

Or better yet, just stick with the Fedora provided packages.
