I realize that. In fact I've tried removing
.gnome2/keyrings/login.keyring but it doesn't seem to help.

Does that mean disabling gnome-keyring for Gnome apps?

I can see that would be a problem. I'm surprised there isn't a
Freedesktop standard for this.

BTW when you say proprietary do you mean undocumented?
