Well, looks like Gmail and Gmane and/or KNode don't like each other. Finding out who's the party to blame probably amounts to a careful reading of all the relevant RFCs (which are both the E-Mail and NNTP/Usenet RFCs - if they disagree, Gmane is the party to blame for not doing the translation, if they agree, one of the clients is at fault). What's sure is that KNode is not using the In-Reply-To header (only References) and Gmail is only looking for that header and ignoring References. Both behaviors suck for interoperability. (I should probably try filing a bug against KNode and see what they have to say about this issue, hoping Gmane won't strip the header out while gatewaying to the mailing list if KNode sends it.) At least the mailman archiving tool does understand References (which means my posts show up properly threaded in the official archive).
