boot into level 3, login as root
# Xorg -configure
creates a file /root/xorg.conf.new
test it with directions given something like X -???
then if it works, posts mouse pointer in about middle of screen, copy it over to /etc/X11 directory
# cp xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
