I have been having some problems lately and I was wandering if anyone can point me in the direction of a solution.  Please keep in mind that I am a Linux novice.

Right now I am running Fedora 10 on a Dell Latitude C640 laptop.  My laptop battery has gone bad and can no longer hold a charge, and I haven't gotten my replacement yet.  I can only run my laptop when it is plugged in.  If the power cord gets unplugged, my laptop shuts off instantly.  This has now happened to me on two occasions, causing my laptop to be improperly shut down.

Each time this has happened, I restart my computer to find that all the text on my computer has either disappeared or turned to gibberish, including that on the start up screen, all the menus, in my web browser, and every where else as far as I can tell.  The only way I have been able to fix this problem thus far is by completely reloading my computer with a fresh install of fedora 10.  I was wandering if anyone knows a  better solution.

Thanks,
Devin J. Garman
