Yep, I believe that yum came from Duke but was originally/still is for Yellow Dog Linux which was specialized for the Apple/Macintosh machines.  Since the base for Yellow Dog Linux was Fedora, Fedora thus benefitted by incorporating it and it is a great tool to have :)

The NSA sponsors selinux if I am not mistaken, and other companies like Apple which bought out CUPS now sponsors it and the communities(open source) benefit from the this :)

Some people also buy Fedora CD's/DVD's from online vendors and some of those vendors might?/might not give back money to Fedora Project.  The list goes on and on.
