I can confirm that I see the same thing with VNC connection, but to add. I have found that you can open a terminal window, and run /usr/bin/nautilus That will then run, and it will show the desktop. Unfortunately, you have to leave that terminal running. So, not sure why the regular start fails, but one from a terminal window seems to work.
