Nick,

 Just for giggles try setting selinux to permissive or disabling
entirely and then testing public key authentication.  I ran into the
same problem, thought it was a problem between openssh 4 and 5, did a
bunch of "googling", and found naught. Then I disabled selinux and,
voila', all worked as it should.  Problem is I don't know enough about
selinux to begin to guess what to tweak to make it work with it on.
